
Being an island, Sri Lanka is surrounded by the Indian Ocean. If your travel far enough you will always read the sea where the land ends. Where there is the ocean, there is the beach! Sri Lanka is famous for it’s golden sands and the deep blue seas.
We came up with a list of the top 5 scenic beaches that you should make sure to visit while you are living the island life.
- Nilaveli
Nilaveli makes it to the top of our list due to its Turquoise waters and the golden sands. Situated about 20 km away from the Trincomalee town, it is well known for its secluded beach. The long stretch of sand is known as the island’s most picturesque beach. The Sunrise is to die for, if you are willing wake up a few hours early. The pigeon island is a boat ride away, the coral reefs near the island is sought after by snorkelers who visit from all over the world. The skies around the beach offers a view of thousands of stars at night.
- Kalpitiya
Situated in the North Western Province, and well known for its scenic beauty, Kalpitiya is a paradise for dolphin and whale watching. Schools of dolphins and whales often habituate the seas about 6km away from the shore. The area is rather secluded, and with ample restaurants that provide boat riding and experienced guides. The area is a marine sanctuary which is known for its coral reefs and biodiversity.
- Arugam- Bay
Well known for its blue waters, and the favorable currents for surfers, Arugam Bay is known as the surfer’s paradise. It is among the top ten surfing points of the world. The beach is known for its golden sand and is often a summer beach party venue. Couples have made it an ideal wedding destination over the years.
- Unawatuna
Unawatuna is the most popular beach of Sri Lanka. Earlier it was known for the Unawatuna bay, shaped like a horseshoe and it’s scenic beauty but the beach has changed shape over time due to sea erosion. Yet, that did not stop it from becoming one of the most popular beaches. The beach backs up to Galle, one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic and spectacular towns. Easily reachable in one and a half hours along the highway, Unawatuna is often visited by a multitude of tourists who visit Galle.
- Pasikudah
Pasikudah bay in the East Coast is known for its scenic beauty. The flat sea-bed offers the perfect grounds for dip in the sea. The sea is calmer around this part of the island, as it is home to major coral reefs. As most coastal towns, you can notice the fishermen bringing in their daily catch, and setting out to the sea. The beach is not overcrowded, therefore it is the ideal place to sunbathe and rest.
